You can't hunt
turkeys spring and fall, for more than half a century without
learning a thing or two. And you can't lead two states' wild
turkey restoration projects without forming an opinion or two.
In this tidy little volume, Wayne Bailey offers observations
and nuggets of wisdom that will be as interesting and useful
to grizzled veterans as to newly smitten gobbler chasers.
-Neal Weakly, Chapel Hill, NC
No one pursued a wildlife biologist's professional life more
enthusiastically and energetically than Wayne Bailey. When not
studying wild turkeys, Wayne was hunting them. His dedication
has increased the numbers, expanded the territory, and improved
the hunting of the grand bird. Wayne is largely responsible for
wild turkey restoration in West Virginia and North Carolina,
but his influence extends nationwide. This marvelous book of
interest to every turkey hunter - novice or veteran will appeal
to the naturalist and the general reader as well.
-Walt Lesser, Wildlife biologist, retired
Wayne Bailey's arrival in North Carolina in 1970 marked the beginning
of the end of the slide in wild turkey numbers due to over harvest
in the fall and the absence of a credible wild turkey restoration
program. Wayne brought to North Carolina his unique experience
and unparalleled knowledge of wild turkey management gained through
successful application of restoration techniques in West Virginia.
Wayne Bailey marshaled the resources and support of wildlife
officials and conservation groups necessary to begin the restoration
program that culminated in the return of the wild turkey to every
county and successful completion of a comprehensive restoration
effort in North Carolina. Through his consummate professionalism
and tireless efforts, he provided the leadership and advocacy
required to initiate and implement the crucial 10 years of wild
turkey restoration in North Carolina from 1970 to 1980.
-Richard B. Hamilton, Chief Deputy Director, NCWRC
Wayne Bailey was a pioneer of wild turkey restoration in this
country as well as one of the founding fathers of the national
Wild Turkey Federation. He came to North Carolina at a time when
our wild turkey population was at an all-time low and still declining.
He was the one responsible for turning things around for the
wild turkey in this state. Wayne righted a sinking ship and set
us on the proper course for the future. It was my privilege to
have had the opportunity to work with Wayne for several years
during the 1970's - to study "at the feet of the Grand Master"
so to speak. "It has been quite an honor to follow in his
footsteps and carry the wild turkey program along the course
Wayne mapped out so long ago. I'm proud to be able to call him
my mentor, but I'm more proud to be able to call him my friend."
- Michael Seamster, Wild Turkey Project Leader, North Carolina
Wildlife Resources Commission.
